You leave from Shin-Osaka
Shinkansen services west of Osaka start from Shin-Osaka, not Osaka Station. If you are staying in the centre, allow for the short local train or subway ride north to get there before your departure time.
The Tokaido line from Tokyo becomes the Sanyo Shinkansen at Shin-Osaka and continues west towards Hiroshima and eventually Fukuoka. Many services run through, so a train from Tokyo may simply carry on without you changing.
Which service
Nozomi and Mizuho are the fast ones and neither is covered by the Japan Rail Pass without a supplement. Sakura and Hikari are covered and take a little longer. On a ninety-minute journey the difference between the fastest and the pass-eligible option is modest, so pass holders lose little here.
Arriving in Hiroshima
Hiroshima Station is east of the centre. Trams — Hiroshima still has an extensive network, which is unusual in Japan — run from outside the station towards the Peace Memorial Park and the A-Bomb Dome, taking around fifteen to twenty minutes. The tram is slower than a taxi and part of the character of the city.
Getting to Miyajima
The floating torii gate at Itsukushima is on Miyajima, an island southwest of the city, and most visitors do it from Hiroshima. The usual route is a local JR train along the coast to Miyajimaguchi, then a short ferry. Allow around an hour each way from Hiroshima Station, and check the tide — the gate looks entirely different at high and low water.
Day trip or overnight? Hiroshima and Miyajima together are a long day from Osaka. It works, but the Peace Memorial Museum in particular is not something to rush, and staying a night makes the whole thing considerably less pressured.
Onward to Fukuoka
The Sanyo line continues west to Hakata, the station for Fukuoka, in another hour or so. If you are heading that way, Hiroshima is a natural break rather than a detour.
Booking notes for Japan
Shinkansen trains carry both reserved and unreserved carriages. A reserved ticket is a specific seat on a specific train; an unreserved one lets you take any train that day and sit where you find space — real flexibility that most of Europe does not offer. Unreserved is fine outside Golden Week, Obon and New Year, when it means standing.
If you hold a Japan Rail Pass, remember that the fastest services — Nozomi and Mizuho — are not included without paying a supplement. Pass holders normally take the Hikari or Sakura instead, which on most routes costs only a little extra time.

Common questions
Where do I board in Osaka?
Shin-Osaka, not Osaka Station. Allow time for the short local train or subway ride north from the city centre.
Can I use a Japan Rail Pass?
On the Sakura and Hikari, yes. The faster Nozomi and Mizuho require a supplement. On a ninety-minute journey the time difference is small, so pass holders lose little.
How do I get to Miyajima?
A local JR train along the coast to Miyajimaguchi, then a short ferry to the island. Allow roughly an hour each way from Hiroshima Station, and check the tide — the torii gate looks completely different at high and low water.
Is a day trip from Osaka realistic?
It is possible but tight if you want both the Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima. The museum in particular is not something to rush. An overnight makes the trip far more comfortable.
