The journey
Services leave from Euston in London and run up the West Coast Main Line, typically calling at Stafford, Crewe and Runcorn before reaching Liverpool Lime Street. The quickest take a little over two hours; some run longer depending on how many stops they make.
Lime Street is unusually well placed even by British standards. You come out at the top of the city centre, a few minutes from the shopping streets, and around twenty minutes on foot from the waterfront and the Albert Dock. For most visits there is no onward transport to arrange.
Getting the London end right
Euston serves the West Coast route — Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow. It is a short walk from both King’s Cross and St Pancras, which serve entirely different destinations, so it is worth checking your ticket rather than heading for whichever of the three you know best.
Platform timing at Euston. Platforms are frequently announced only shortly before departure, which sends a large crowd towards the gates at once. If you have luggage, a reserved seat is worth having and arriving a little early is worth doing.
Connections from Liverpool
Lime Street is also the hub for local Merseyrail services, which is how most people reach the wider area including the coast at Southport and across the river to the Wirral. If you are going on to Chester or North Wales, check whether your connection leaves from Lime Street itself or from Liverpool Central, which is a short walk away.
Worth knowing before you go
Liverpool gets extremely busy on match days, and Lime Street with it. If your travel happens to coincide with a home fixture at either Anfield or Goodison Park, expect a fuller train and a fuller station, and book a seat reservation rather than relying on finding one.
Getting the fare down
British fares reward planning more than almost any other network. The cheap Advance fares are released around twelve weeks before travel and sold in limited batches at rising prices — buy early and you pay a fraction of the walk-up fare, buy on the day and you pay the lot. The catch is that an Advance ticket is valid only on the train you booked.
Two other things are worth knowing and neither is a trick: a railcard costs around £30 a year and takes roughly a third off most fares, and split ticketing — buying two tickets covering consecutive parts of the same journey, staying in the same seat — is entirely permitted and frequently cheaper than the through fare.
Our guide to train travel in the UK goes through ticket types, railcards and split ticketing in full.
Common questions
Is the train direct?
Yes, Avanti West Coast runs direct services from Euston to Liverpool Lime Street through the day, typically calling at a handful of intermediate stations.
How close is Lime Street to the centre?
Very. You walk out into the top of the city centre, with the main shopping streets a few minutes away and the waterfront and Albert Dock around twenty minutes on foot.
Should I reserve a seat?
Reservations are free and worth taking, particularly at weekends and on match days when the route gets busy. A valid ticket lets you board regardless, but not necessarily to sit down.
What about getting to Chester or North Wales?
Change at Liverpool, but check the station — some onward services leave from Liverpool Central rather than Lime Street, which is a short walk away.
